ESPN will air multi-part documentary series about Derek Jeter 'The Captain' in 2022

After the success of "The Last Dance," another superstar athlete's life story will be told through a multi-part documentary series on ESPN.

This time it's former New York Yankees captain and shortstop Derek Jeter, now the CEO and part-owner of the Miami Marlins.

ESPN made the announcement Tuesday at Disney's upfront. The six-part series will air in 2022 and is titled "The Captain."

Following a 20-year career in pinstripes, Jeter was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020 with 99.7% of the vote and will be enshrined this summer. He won five World Series rings in New York, with four championships in five years between 1996-2000. He was 2000 World Series MVP and made 14 All-Star teams.

Off the field, Jeter's personal and dating life consumed the attention of the New York tabloids. Over the years, the Michigan native became famously adept at navigating the press and paparazzi.

The documentary, directed by three-time Emmy Award winner Randy Wilkins, will focus on all of those aspects of Jeter's life. It will "reveal the man behind the icon," ESPN's announcement said.

"Jeter’s commitment to winning came with a rare combination of competitiveness and cool, traits he has taken with him into retirement as he tackles new tests as a team owner and executive with the Miami Marlins and as a father," ESPN said. "As he prepares to enter Cooperstown this July, he is pulling back the curtain to reveal what it was really like to be 'The Captain.'"

Wilkins has previously directed ESPN 30 for 30 "86-32," which went in-depth on the controversial boxing decision between Roy Joy Jones Jr. and Par Si-Hun at the 1988 Olympics. He is also an outspoken Yankees fan unafraid to offer analysis on Twitter under his handle @pamsson and the independent Yankees blog "Views from 314ft."

"I never thought I would be given the responsibility to tell Derek's story," Wilkins wrote on Twitter. "I take great pride in this. I won't get too deep into this now, but trust me, this will not be a baseball highlight package. We're going to tell a robust story that extends beyond the field."

Spike Lee is serving as an executive producer, as is Mike Tollin, who was an executive producer for "The Last Dance."
