Things got heated in the third quarter of the Baylor vs. Iowa State game.
With Iowa State on offense and leading 17-0, Cyclones wideout Hakeem Butler went after Baylor’s Blake Lynch while blocking on a running play.
Butler held Lynch down with a knee to Lynch’s throat. Naturally, that caught the attention of Lynch’s teammates, and things escalated from there.
In the middle of the chaos, Iowa State running back David Montgomery went after Baylor’s Greg Roberts and pulled him out of the scrum. Roberts took a swing at Montgomery, and Montgomery came back at him. Both players were ejected.
Here’s another angle where you can clearly see Montgomery retaliating:
While Roberts and Montgomery were the only two players ejected (Butler probably dodged a bullet for sparking the whole thing), both teams were assessed unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Yes, both teams. The entire roster. That meant if any other player was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the game, he would be automatically ejected.
Because of the brawl, Baylor QB Charlie Brewer was later ejected
Sure enough, it happened to Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer. After a fourth-quarter run, Brewer was upset that an Iowa State defender was not penalized for hitting him as he slid to give himself up.
Here’s Brewer slide, and the hit he was upset about:
From there, Brewer rose to his feet and went right toward an official. He said something that sparked a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Because the entire Baylor team — Brewer included — was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the fight, this was technically the second of the game for Brewer. That resulted in an ejection.
At that point in the game, Baylor trailed 28-14 and was looking to cut the deficit to one score. But because Brewer was disqualified, the Bears had to turn to backup Jalan McClendon. Four plays later (all McClendon incomplete passes), Baylor turned it over on downs.
The Bears would later get the ball back, but McClendon could not get them into the end zone. Iowa State went on to win 28-14 to improve to 6-3 (5-2 Big 12) and clinch bowl eligibility. It was the fifth straight win for the Cyclones.
Baylor dropped to 5-5 (3-4 Big 12) with the loss. Baylor has two games left — TCU and Texas Tech — to reach a bowl.
David Montgomery apologizes
Montgomery, one of the best running backs in the Big 12 and a captain for Iowa State, issued an apology for his role in the fight after the game.
First I would like to apologize to cyclone nation and my team for my actions, Me as a captain should have not reacted the way I did and I sincerely apologize for that!!! But I will defend my brothers no matter what and i stand on that!

Montgomery will apparently miss the first half of next week’s game against Texas.
Big 12 official says David Montgomery is suspended for the first half of the Texas game. The play can be reviewed, aka, Iowa State can ask for an appeal.
