ENMU finishes 3-0 in WT Invitational

Feb. 13—CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University's final two scheduled games in the West Texas A&M Invitational were canceled due to the prospect of inclement weather.

On Saturday morning, the Greyhounds (7-1) completed a 3-0 run through the event with a 10-2, run-rule victory over Colorado State-Pueblo. All of the team's games so far have been against Rocky Mountain Conference opposition.

After beating Colorado-Colorado Springs 9-2 and Fort Lewis 3-2 on Friday, the Hounds broke through for three runs in the bottom of the third against Pueblo (1-7). Senior shortstop Valeria Contreras reached on an error, then moved around to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Senior second baseman Chanler Groves then walked and took second on another wild pitch before freshman center fielder Judith Osuna singled to right, scoring Contreras and sending Groves to third.

Senior designated hitter Alondra Vasquez then drove in Groves with a bunt single and senior first baseman Taighen Whitsel brought Osuna home with a fielder's choice grounder.

The Thunderwolves made it 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth, but ENMU answered back with six in the bottom half on a two-run double by sophomore left fielder Madison Begave, a run-scoring triple by Contreras, a double steal with Contreras taking home, a Pueblo throwing error and a bases-loaded walk to junior Sydney Loyet. The Hounds then ended it with an unearned run in the fifth.

Begaye and junior right fielder Grace Rofii each had two of ENMU's seven hits, with Begaye scoring two runs and knocking in two. Sophomore right-hander Jordan Rivera (3-0) earned the win in the circle, walking two and striking out six.

ENMU begins Lone Star Conference play with a three-game series against Texas A&M International this weekend at Laredo, beginning with an 11 a.m. (MST) twin bill on Friday.
