What is the England team news?

Gareth Southgate has sidelined Raheem Sterling against Montenegro after the England forward's high-profile bust-up with Joe Gomez.

Sterling stayed with the group and apologised to team-mates at a meeting on Monday night, then trained as usual the following morning. Gomez appeared to be sporting a cut close to his right eye in the session.

Uncapped goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been called into the England squad, with injured pair Tom Heaton and Ross Barkley dropping out.

Chelsea midfielder Barkley had been a doubt with an ankle injury while Aston Villa keeper Heaton is battling a calf problem.

Henderson, on loan at Sheffield United from Manchester United, has come in for Heaton but there are no plans to replace Barkley.

England will reach a landmark in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro. It will be the country's 1,000th men's international and the occasion will be marked in a number of ways, including recognising the notable contributions of former players as well as managers while the current crop will wear individual 'legacy numbers' on their shirts.

And what about Montenegro?

Montenegro are without a win in their seven Euro 2020 qualifiers - they have registered three draws and four defeats - and suffered a 2-0 loss to Kosovo in their last game.

What are the latest standings?

What are they saying?

Gareth Southgate defended his decision to sideline Raheem Sterling against Montenegro after likening the England forward's high-profile bust-up with Joe Gomez to a family row:

"Raheem in his (social media) post explained for a very brief moment his emotions ran over. It would be correct to say that's not the same for Joe.

"We are dealing with a very young squad in a sport where emotions often run high. These things happen in football. My priority is always the care and wellbeing of all my players. All my players.

"Then you have a decision to make as to whether there needs to be something further, which is my reasoning for not selecting Raheem for the game on Thursday.

"I love all of my players. We are like a family and all family have disagreements.

"Most important for any family is to come through those disagreements and work through them. I don't expect as a manager to never have to deal with things that are unexpected or difficult."

England manager Gareth Southgate hopes a line can now be drawn under last month's racism in Bulgaria so his players can focus on football matters again:

"I spoke with a couple of the players after. I spoke with all of the players immediately after the game and then I spoke with a couple of players in the couple of days following. I think the players will want to move on, really.

"I think, for all of them, they dealt with it brilliantly and it would be wrong not to discuss it at all but I know that they want to get on with the football.

"They would feel that they're having to talk about those areas more than they want to and, for all the bits of regret, a really good performance was overshadowed for them, especially someone like Tyrone (Mings).

"His debut was unique and he's talked brilliantly after the game in every aspect but for him, I'm sad that he had to talk about other things than his performance which was excellent, so I think they will feel, 'on with the football as quickly as possible'."

What are the odds?

  • England 1/12

  • Draw 14/1

  • Montenegro 42/1

What is our prediction?

There is very little experience of top-level club football in this Montenegro squad so England should have far too much quality for them to handle.

Predicted score: England 4 Montenegro 0.
