England have not beaten Germany in an international tournament since the 1966 World Cup final, but hopes are high of ending that wretched run in Tuesday's Euro 2020 last-16 tie.

It is the first tournament meeting between the nations since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when Germany advanced with a 4-2 victory.

Playing at Wembley will also evoke memories of the Euro '96 semi-final, when England manager Gareth Southgate missed the crucial penalty in the shootout. Germany went on to win the final and lift the trophy.

England qualified for the knockout rounds with seven points and three clean sheets in the group stages, while Germany needed a late equaliser against Hungary to squeeze through but were impressive against Portugal.

Who are Telegraph Sport columnists and an assortment of sporting stars backing to progress?

Jamie Carragher, former England defender

England to win on penalties
It's a 50-50 game. I think it will go to penalties and this time England will do it.

Frankie Dettori, jockey

England 1 Germany 0
Sterling will score the goal - although, to be honest, I'm more concerned about Italy. See you in the final.

Michael Vaughan, former England cricket captain

England 2 Germany 1
Harry Kane will score the winner - but I have no idea why.

Richard Scudamore, former Premier League chief executive

England 3 Germany 1
The last time we beat them by that precise score was before I was born: 1956.

Will Greenwood, former England rugby international

England 5 Germany 1
I remember I was at Harlequins and went into the clubhouse to see Emile Heskey and co tearing it up on the big screen - I reckon we are due another of those!

Harry Redknapp, former manager

England 2 Germany 0
I just think, all round, we have much better players than the Germans now, especially in forward positions. Harry Kane will cause Mats Hummels all kinds of problems.

Lee Westwood, former world No1 golfer

England 3 Germany 1
I'm confident. The Germany team are not great, are they? And Sterling will be too quick for Mats Hummels.

Sir Ian McGeechan, former Lions player and coach

England 2 Germany 1
Although England haven’t beaten Germany in a knockout game since 1966, I think the speed and exuberance of their young midfielders could be the difference, with their off-the-ball work rate giving the player in possession earlier options and accelerating any passing movements, just as in rugby.

Katherine Brunt, England cricketer

England 1 Germany 0
Harry Kane to score - with a header. He’s hungry for goals and he’ll deliver on the big stage.

Frank Warren, boxing promoter

England 3 Germany 1
I would play Bukayo Saka - he could be the star. And Harry Kane is ready to shine at Wembley, as well.

Steve Bruce, Newcastle manager

England 1 Germany 0
I think England will win but it’s not going to be convincing - it will be tight and nervous.

Austin Healey, former England rugby international

England 5 Germany 0
Anything else will be a bonus.

Natalie Sciver, England cricketer

England win on penalties
I think it will be 1-1 after full-time, with Sterling to score for England, but we will win it in the shoot-out.

Sir Ben Ainslie, Olympic gold medal-winning sailor

England 2 Germany 1

Harry Kane is going to find his mojo when it counts. Germany will fight back with a late goal but it won’t be enough.
