England fans console team, themselves with stadium rendition of Oasis classic

Football is not coming home.

England lost 2-1 a heartbreaker to Croatia in extra time Wednesday to fall one game short of the World Cup final. It was an abrupt end to a run that rejuvenated England’s soccer program and fell two wins short of the country’s first World Cup title since 1966.

England fans send World Cup team out in fitting fashion

English soccer fans have been fully on board during the run, and didn’t bail on their club when the chips were down on Wednesday. In fact, those in attendance in Moscow did the most English thing imaginable immediately following the loss.

They broke out in song to the tune of 1995 Oasis hit “Don’t look back in anger.”

The song became an anthem in England after the deadly suicide bombing at a 2017 Manchester Ariana Grande concert, a rallying cry of sorts in hard times.

While English soccer fans would surely prefer to still be singing about football coming home, Wednesday’s rendition of an Oasis classic was a proper coda to an emotional World Cup run that came up just short.
