Model Emily Ratajkowski has hit back at trolls who criticised her for not wearing a bra at a protest against the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The 27-year-old model and actress had worn a white tank top without a bra underneath it to the protest in Washington DC last month.

She expressed disappointment that critics had chosen to focus on what she was wearing when she was there to make a political point.

Ratajkowski, who was arrested at the protest along with fellow star Amy Schumer, said her outfit seemed “completely normal” at the time because it was a sweltering hot day.

She told Stellar magazine: “I knew being there would be important and I knew some people would find it controversial but I never expected anyone to talk about why I wasn’t wearing a bra under my tank top.”

Ratajkowski added: “And I was there making a political point. Why would people focus on what I was wearing?”

One critic had written to Ratajkowski: “put some clothes on and read the constitution sweetheart” while another suggested she would have had more “credibility” had she worn a bra.

Schumer had previously defended the Gone Girl actress in an Instagram post, saying that those who criticised what she was wearing were making comments “synonymous with saying what a woman wears insights bad behaviour.”

She added: “I wasn’t wearing a bra either.”

Hundreds of people were taking part in a protest against Mr Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court following allegations of sexual misconduct which he stringently denied.

Ratajkowski had held a sign during the protest which said: “Respect female existence or expect our resistance.”
