Elton John discusses attending AA meetings on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's new podcast
Sir Elton John has opened up about his ongoing sobriety to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on the first episode of their new podcast.
The 73-year-old singer – who is now 30 years sober admitted on the Sussexes’ Spotify podcast Archwell Audio that group video-calling had been vital in getting him through lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Sir Elton said: “I’m a recovering alcoholic so I have an AA [Alcoholics Anonymous] meeting from this house every Sunday.

“I connect with friends who I’ve known for over 30 years in the programme, and that’s great.

“If it hadn’t have been for Zoom I don’t know what we would’ve done, I really don’t. Without Zoom… it’s been a lifesaver.”
Meghan and Harry – who resigned from the British Royal Family in January this year – launched their new podcast with a holiday special, looking back at 2020 and the importance of keeping connected during the pandemic.
They signed off by getting 19-month-old son Archie to help them wish listeners a “Happy New Year”.

Sir Elton has always spoken candidly about his sobriety after battling drink and drugs during his early career.
Marking the 30th anniversary of his sobriety earlier this year, he said: “I'm truly a blessed man. If I hadn't finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I'd be dead.”
Sir Elton has been in a relationship with David Furnish, 58, for 27 years.
They entered into a civil partnership together in 2005, before tying the knot when same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in March 2014.
The couple share sons Zachary, 10, and Elijah, seven.
