Ellendale boys' hoops gets convincing 55-35 win over Linton/HMB

Feb. 26—JAMESTOWN — The Ellendale Cardinals turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 20-point win with a big second half in a 55-33 win over Linton/Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in the District 2 tournament on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The teams traded the lead back and forth in the early going as the game went into the second quarter tied at nine. During the opening quarter, the Cardinals were down 7-4 before a television timeout came at the right time for the Cardinals. Early in the second quarter, the Cardinals' Kade Schimke hit a three to push the lead to 12-9. That started a Cardinals (14-7) run that saw them stretch the lead to 18-9 before the Lions fought back to cut the deficit to 23-16 heading into the half.

"We play five guys, six guys. sometimes seven," Cardinals head coach Brian Vance said. "So, it is kind of nice when we don't have as big of a bench that those minute breaks are huge."

The Cardinals took an early 27-16 lead before the Lions (17-4) went on a run to cut the deficit to 29-20. The Cardinals would respond with a bucket to push the lead to 31-20 and that was as close as the Lions would get through the remainder of the game, as the Cardinals went into the fourth quarter with a 41-23 lead.

The Cardinals kept it up in the fourth outscoring the Lions 14-10 to get the win. After they shot 7-for-26 for 26.9% from the field in the first half, the Lions shot a slightly worse 6-for-28 for 21.4% in the second half.

After the game, Lions head coach Alex Jangula challenged his team.

"It's gonna sting tonight," Jangula said. "It should sting. We have to reset though because we're playing for our lives tomorrow. So, we gotta come out, we gotta win tomorrow or else it's gonna be a shortened season."

The Cardinals return to the floor at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, when they take on Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier. The Lions look to qualify for the region tournament at 4 p.m. on Feb. 27, when they take on Medina/Pingree-Buchanan.
