Edgewood's Vencill earns D-II girls Northeast Lakes District Coach of the Year honor

The Edgewood girls basketball team had a historicai 2023-24 season.

The Warriors were recognized for their effort as Randy Vencill was selected as the Northeast Lakes All-District Coach of the Year. as presented by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

The all-district teams are picked among schools from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Lorain counties.

They are selected by a group of reporters from the Ashtabula Star Beacon, cleveland.com, the News-Herald in Willoughby, Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria and Morning Journal in Lorain.

Edgewood finished 20-2 overall, and 13-1 for first in the Chagrin Valley Lake Division. The Warriors also reached the district tournament with a 55-47 win over Youngstown Ursuline.

"I am honored to have received the coach of the year honor," Vencill said. "I feel unworthy with all the great coaches in the district. Thankful for all the great relationships I have with them.

"So thankful for our team and our coaching staff who are the reason for me receiving this honor. Very grateful."

Ashtabula County players also received first, second, third and honorable mention honors.

First-team selections included: Edgewood's Katie McCollister in D-II; Geneva's Delaney Marrison, D-II and Saint John's Alyssa Cevera and Mickey Zheng, D-IV.

Second-team choices consisted of: Geneva's Brooke Richmond in D-II; Pymatuning Valley's Leah DeMoss, D-III and Saint John's Grace DiSalvatore, D-IV.

County players on the third team included: Edgewood's McKenna Vencill in D-II; PV's Zoey Painter, D-III and Grand Valley's Kaelyn Hart, D-III.

Among the honorable mention selections were: Lakeside's Jelena Torrance and Onesty Anderson in D-1; Edgewood's Annie Johnston, Avery Vencill and Leigha Guyton, D-II; Geneva's Tahkyah Myers and Moharrah Jackson, D-II; Conneaut's Kayla Farley and Bella Fix, D-II; Jefferson's Mia Contenza, Tatum Bordeaux and Kennidie Rogers, D-II; PV's Taryn Tisch, Mae Struna and Jolene Sharpe, D-III; GV's Morgan Crawford, Dixie Miller and Reagan Boiarski, D-III and Saint John's Alexa Jordan, D-IV.

For Madison in D-I, Zoey Deligianis picked up second-team all-district honors; Claire Wakim, third team, and Sydney Sorber, honorable mention.
