Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier pulls away in second half to beat Benson County

Feb. 24—MAYVILLE — Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier qualified for the Division B state girls basketball tournament with a 59-40 win over Benson County Saturday at Mayville State University.

The win came during a state-qualifying play-in game between two teams that came up short in regional play earlier in the week.

Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier finished second in Region 1 after losing in overtime to Sargent County in that region's title game, while Benson County was third in Region 2.

Saturday against Benson County, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter before Benson County rallied to go up 26-23 at halftime, aided by 14 points from freshman guard Kaitlyn Maddock and nine points from sophomore Aubrey Kenner.

The second half, however, belonged to Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier. The Rebels outscored Benson County 14-9 in the third quarter and 22-5 in the fourth.

Mataeya Mathern had 20 points overall, including 14 in the second half, for Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier. She also had 11 rebounds and four steals.

Jaelyn Bertsch had 14 points for the Rebels, nine of which came in the second half.

Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier was 20-for-44 from the field and 14-of-16 at the free-throw line. Benson County was 13-of-41 from the field and 9-of-13 at the line.

For Benson County, Kenner finished with 17 points and Maddock had 14. Lacie Fautsch had seven rebounds.

Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier now is 21-5, while Benson County ends its season at 18-8.
