Edgeley/K-M boys' hoops defeat Kidder County 70-15 in District 2 tourney

Feb. 23—JAMESTOWN — The Edgeley/Kulm-Montpellier Rebels woke up from a slow start to get a commanding 70-15 win over the Kidder Wolves in the first round of the boys' District 2 tournament on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Rebels (17-3) were up 6-5 heading into the second where Drew Nitschke hit a bucket and converted the and-one to push the lead out to 9-5 early on. That kickstarted a run that saw the Rebels go on a 46-2 run to push the lead to 55-7.

"We played together and we got easy shots," Rebels head coach Kevin Strobel said. "Our defense created easy shots which helps. We did a nice job I thought pushing the ball up and down the floor looking in transition both ways offense to defense."

The Wolves (2-19) would find a little bit of a scoring touch throughout the rest of the game, though, scoring eight more points to finish the game with 15. After the game, Wolves head coach Austin Schmidt challenged his team in the locker room to use this game to their advantage.

"Remember it," Schmidt said. "I got a lot of young kids, if that game doesn't piss you off and sting then you're future is never gonna change, you're always going to be an eight seed in the district tournament. If it pisses you off to get better that's what we're looking for."

The 55-point win for the Rebels is their largest by-point differential this season.

The Rebels return to the floor at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, when they take on the winner of the game between LaMoure/Litchville-Marion and Medina/Pingree-Buchanan. The Wolves are back in action at 3 p.m. on Feb. 26, when they take on the loser of the game between the Thunder and Loboes.
