Eddie George hires UTEP's Theron Aych as Tennessee State football offensive coordinator

Texas El-Paso wide receivers coach Theron Aych is Tennessee State's new offensive coordinator, Tigers coach Eddie George told The Tennessean on Tuesday.

Aych replaced Hue Jackson, who became the Grambling State coach in December.

Aych was in the second year of his second stint at UTEP. He was there previously as assistant wide receivers coach in 2016. He spent the four years in between as wide receivers and tight ends coach at Arizona.

"Theron comes from a really good system where they were able to get a lot of rushing yards with great balance in the offense," George said. "Not quite the pro style system, more (run/pass option). More college friendly."

UTEP was fifth in passing (252.9 yards) in Conference USA in 2021 and 10th in rushing (133.9).

Earlier in his career, Aych, a Zachary, Louisiana, native, spent four seasons at Central Missouri where he coached former Titans Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker, who was drafted as a wide receiver in the 2006 draft.

Aych was on staff at Arizona under coach Rich Rodriguez.

This won't be Aych's first time to be an offensive coordinator. He held the position along with being assistant head coach at Angelo State from 2011-15 and was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Mesabi Range (Minnesota) Community College in 1997.

Aych, who played receiver at Northern State (1992-95), also had coaching stints at Houston (2000-02), Washington (2003) and Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College (1998-99)

TSU (5-6, 3-3) finished fifth in the OVC in 2021, George's first year as coach. The Tigers were second in passing (203.6) and sixth in rushing (114.7).

George said he is also searching for a new offensive line coach since Mark Hutson went with Jackson to Grambling State.
