Early projection for Oregon Ducks’ starters on offense for 2024 football season

With the 2023 college football season behind us, attention has turned to roster construction. How are player decisions and events lining up for Dan Lanning as the Oregon Ducks head into a new conference in 2024.

We have significant clarity when it comes to which players are returning, which are leaving and which are joining the team via the transfer portal this offseason.

As a result, we have a pretty good idea who the starters will be as the Ducks kick off their Big Ten era. Here’s our estimation for the offensive side of the ball:

Projected Starter: Dillon Gabriel

Competition: Dante Moore

Analysis: It’s hard to argue that Dillon Gabriel will not be QB1 for the Ducks after transferring from Oklahoma, but don’t expect Dante Moore to sit idly by as the backup after transferring in from UCLA. I expect the true sophomore to put up a fight and make it a competition worth watching, but in the end I believe Gabriel will get the starting job.

Running Back

Projected Starter: Jordan James

Competition: Noah Whittington

Analysis: Expectations should be very high for Jordan James after what he’s done over the last two years. With Noah Whittington returning after his injury in 2023, Oregon should be set in the backfield.

Wide Receiver (X)

Projected Starter: Traeshon Holden

Competition: Jurrion Dickey

Analysis: We saw some really great things from Traeshon Holden at the end of the year, and he should be in line for a much bigger role without Troy Franklin in the rotation. Don’t be shocked to see freshman Jurrion Dickey push him for the starting spot, though.

Wide Receiver (Z)

Projected Starter: Gary Bryant Jr.

Competition: Kyler Kasper

Analysis: Gary Bryant showed flashes in 2023 of being really good. With a bigger target share, I think he can blossom. As far as competition goes, though, it will be interesting to see if the Ducks add anyone via the portal this offseason.

Wide Receiver (Slot)

Projected Starter: Tez Johnson

Competition: Jeremiah McClellan

Analysis: Tez Johnson is the early WR1 for Oregon in 2024, but it will be interesting to see who fits in behind him in the slot. Right now, I have my eye on Jeremiah McClellan, but Oregon is looking at several transfer portal targets at the position.

Tight End

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Projected Starter: Terrance Ferguson

Competition: Kenyon Sadiq

Analysis: With the announcement that Terrance Ferguson is returning for one more year, it’s easy to see him as the TE1 once again. Behind him, I think we see freshman Kenyon Sadiq step into a much bigger role.

Left Tackle

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Projected Starter: Josh Conerly

Competition: Jac’Qawn McRoy

Analysis: Unsurprisingly, Josh Conerly projects as the starting LT after he did a great job in that spot this past season. Behind him, I think we might see true freshman Jac’Qawn McRoy, who would be a 6-foot-8, 365-pound backup.

Left Guard

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Projected Starter: Marcus Harper

Competition: Dave Iuli

Analysis: With Marcus Harper returning, he should keep the left guard spot without much competition. Behind him, I think Dave Iuli has stepped up and deserves a look.

Projected Starter: Iapani Laloulu

Competition: Charlie Pickard

Analysis: Iapani Laloulu is the successor to Jackson Powers-Johnson, who was the successor to Alex Forsyth. There should be no question about that going into 2024.

Right Guard

Rich Janzaruk-USA TODAY Sports

Projected Starter: Matthew Bedford

Competition: Nishad Strother

Analysis: The right guard spot will be interesting to watch. Nishad Strother could very well step in as the starter after sitting for most of the 2023 season, but the Ducks also brought in Matthew Bedford from Indiana, a veteran player with a lot of experience at the RG spot.

Right Tackle

Projected Starter: Ajani Cornelius

Competition: George Silva

Analysis: Ajani Cornelius announced on Sunday that he would return for the 2024 season, so he will undoubtedly be the starter at the RT spot. Behind him, I think we see George Silva in a bigger role.
