Eagles linebacker on Cowboys: 'They always choke'

It’s not like Sunday’s Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys game needed more juice, but Kamu Grugier-Hill provided some.

The Eagles realistically need to win at Dallas on Sunday to make a run at another NFC East title. With a Cowboys win, they’ll lead by two games and have the tiebreaker with three games to go. Unless you believe Mark Sanchez can lead the Washington Redskins to a great finish, a Cowboys win over the Eagles probably wraps up a division championship.

That in itself means there will be a lot of emotion on Sunday. There always is for Eagles-Cowboys games anyway. Then Grugier-Hill added to it by calling the Cowboys chokers.

Kamu Grugier-Hill’s trash talk will be noticed in Dallas

The name Grugier-Hill might not ring a bell for casual fans. He’s a good special teams player who has played a little less than a third of the defensive snaps for the Eagles this season. It’s his third season with the Eagles, and he played every game for last season’s Super Bowl champions.

In other words, Grugier-Hill isn’t the type of player you’d expect to provide bulletin-board material to the Cowboys.

“I mean, look at Dallas’ history. They always choke,” Grugier-Hill said. “So we’ll go down there and make them choke.”

A couple points need to be made. First, there’s nothing wrong with some spirited trash talk. The NFL has been programmed to say nothing interesting ever, so it’s actually fun when a player steps out of that. Also, Grugier-Hill has a sly smile when he said it so it’s not like he’s coming from a bad place. Here’s NBC Sports Philadelphia’s video of it:

Nevertheless, all of a sudden Grugier-Hill will be a much more well-known name in Texas.

Cowboys-Eagles will be a fun showdown

In Grugier-Hill’s defense, it’s not like the Cowboys haven’t choked before. They haven’t won a Super Bowl or even made an appearance since the mid-1990s. Cowboys fans over the last 23 years have probably complained about the team choking at least once.

But it’s presumably not going to go over well when an Eagles player says it.

Sunday’s game should be an interesting one. The Cowboys seemed dead in early November, but have won four straight since to take the lead in the NFC East. The Eagles have had a disappointing follow-up season to their Super Bowl-winning campaign, but have kept themselves alive and will make things more interesting with a win on Sunday.

We’ll see which team chokes then.
