E/K-M boys hoops can't keep up in 75-59 loss to Wilton-Wing

Jan. 5—JAMESTOWN — The Wilton-Wing boys' basketball team could not miss and that was enough to carry them to a 75-59 win over the Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier Rebels on Friday, Jan. 5, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

"They had an answer for everything," Rebels head coach Kevin Strobel said. "We started man and they ran their offense and got open looks and knocked them down and then we switched to zone and tried to give them a different look. We still were knocking them down. It was more than one kid. I told the kids at halftime I said, 'we gotta hang in there and play hard and play tough and hopefully they don't drop like they did in the first half.'"

The Rebels (5-2) trailed 6-2 early but were able to bring it back to 18-14 later in the opening frame. However, the Miners were able to continue to stretch the lead out and head into the second quarter up 28-19.

Early in the second quarter, the Miners (6-1) hit a three to push the lead out to 31-21, forced a turnover and then hit a layup to push their advantage out to 33-21. The Miners continued to keep it up from there and went into the half up 48-33 thanks to a long-range three from Dontaye Fetzer.

Midway through the third quarter, the Rebels' Jacob Nitschke hit a bucket and converted the and-one to cut the deficit to 54-40. The Miners' Teigen Earsley converted an and-one of his own to push his team's lead out to 60-46.

Early in the fourth, the Rebels were able to cut their deficit to single digits at 63-54 but the Miners responded with a run to put the game away from there at 75-59.

"We wanted them to play our game," Miners head coach Scott Wolff said. "We like to get up and down the floor and shoot the three ball. We got them going up and down the floor with us. We didn't want to slow the game down. The second half we slowed it down a little bit just because we had a decent lead and wanted to take some time off the clock. But, every game we play in we like it in the 70s and that's how we roll."

The Rebels return to the floor at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, when they take on Williston Trinity Christian.
