E/K-M boys hoops get 61-51 win over Wyndmere/Lidgerwood

Mar. 4—JAMESTOWN — The Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier boys' basketball team got timely baskets that made the difference in a 61-51 win over Wyndmere/Lidgerwood in the first round of the Region 1 tournament on Monday, March 4, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The game was all about missed opportunities from both sides as the Rebels were up 44-29 early in the second half before the Warbirds responded with a run to cut their deficit down to 46-42. The Warbirds (9-14) kept it up. cutting the deficit to 48-47 heading into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Warbirds hit a three to take a 50-48 lead. The Rebels (20-3) immediately responded with a three of their own to take a 51-50 lead. The teams traded misses over the next few possessions as the Rebels were able to push the lead to 58-51 and held on from there to get the 10-point win.

"We had the lead," Warbirds head coach Todd Hosford said. "We had a one-point lead at one point and then went ice cold. We were getting good looks. There was a few forces but for the most part, those were shots that have fallen this year. Brian Quam had a three-pointer in and out, Jace Stenson had a three-pointer in and out. Levi Kackman had an eight-footer. So we were getting the look so I couldn't be that frustrated. I talked to the guys, we've gone cold at times this year quite a bit but at a time like that it's just more magnified. So it was frustrating."

The tight back-and-forth nature of the game was not there from the start as the Rebels took a 25-14 lead and stretched it to 28-16 heading into the second quarter. The Rebels kept it up in the second quarter, taking a 41-29 lead into the half.

"I thought we started really well," Rebels head coach Kevin Strobel said. "We played a pretty good first half. Defensively, we weren't maybe quite what I wanted to see but obviously, we put up 40-some points. So that part of it was fine. The second half they got after it, they made some shots, next thing you know they're within one possession."

The Rebels are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, when they take on the winner of the game between Sargent County and Linton/HMB.
