Dutch golfers returning an experienced group

Mar. 18—PELLA — After just missing out on a trip to state last year, the Pella boys golf team returns five of its six starters with hopes for a strong season.

Returners for the Dutch include a quartet of seniors in Cade McGinley, AJ Hoekstra, Luke Naig and Thomas Tangen. McGinley is the top returning player with an 18-hole average of 79.2 a year ago. He also finished one shot shy of a state tournament berth as an individual. Hoekstra was next best with an 82.8 average score.

Junior Simon Thoreson and sophomore Cole Floden also return for Pella. Floden had the third best average on the team at 84.6 as a freshman in 2023.

With an open spot on varsity, those returnees and newcomers in junior Patrick Bishara, sophomore KJ Besick and freshmen Landon Reynolds and Griffin Simpson will all have a chance to crack the starting lineup this spring.

Head coach Bob Fessler enters his 21st year with Dutch and is excited about his returners as well as the senior leadership they will provide. He also thinks the newcomers will provide good depth for the team and it will be highly competitive for those last couple of varsity spots.

Pella's schedule is littered with great competition again with a couple of home meets including their always anticipated Dutch Masters, a tough two-day tournament where they host 12 schools from around the state at Bos Landen.

Pella finished just 13 shots off a trip to state last year. With a strong group back in the fold and a competitive group coming up, the Dutch are eying an improved 2024.
