Duke's Trevon Duval had no idea who Pat Summitt was

Pat Summitt may be gone but she isn’t forgotten, except to freshman Duke point guard Trevon Duval. It turns out he is a bit foggy about the identity of one of the most recent historical figures in the game of basketball.

On Saturday, Duval has an opportunity to help Mike Krzyzewski break his tie atop the all-time career wins list with Summitt. Duval was stunned when informed that Coach K was about to surpass Summitt. He was even more surprised to find out who Summitt was.

“Wow,” Duval said at a news conference on Thursday. “Really? That’s amazing. Honestly, to be a part of that — because, I know that UConn’s head coach is a really great coach, but for our coach to be able to pass him and be the winningest coach of all time is amazing.”

Pause.

You probably noticed that Duke’s starting point guard confused Tennessee’s Summitt with her archrival, Geno Auriemma. Duval should be ashamed of himself.

“Tennessee? Really?” a surprised Duval said. “Oh wow!”

The whistling sound you’re hearing could be his draft stock plummeting toward the Earth after scouts discover the gaping hole in his basketball education. This feels like a violation of team rules. Will Coach K sit him against Rhode Island for this? He should consider it.

This is a bad look for one of the prestigious basketball programs in the country. Duval is fortunate that he’s at Duke and not Stephen F. Austin or he’d be hearing about this all spring.
