Down goes No. 1! Women’s basketball world reacts as Ole Miss topples Stanford

Down goes top-seeded Stanford!

In an NCAA Tournament that has been short on surprises so far—unless you really consider Georgia upsetting Florida State to be that big of an upset—Ole Miss decided that it was high time to shake things up a bit.

Relying on their stingy defense to throw the Cardinal off their game badly, Ole Miss provided a massive upset against top-ranked Stanford, knocking them out 54-49.

It certainly wasn’t the prettiest of games. Neither team could shoot over 33% from the field, but the Rebels were able to slow down the pace and frustrate Stanford. They made this a dogfight, and Coach Yo’s girls were absolutely ready for a good scrap.

For the Hawkeyes, the path to the Final Four becomes even clearer now. No longer do you have the No. 1 seed in your way in a potential Elite Eight date. Many believed when the bracket was revealed that Stanford’s spot should’ve gone to either Iowa or UConn, and perhaps this upset further vindicates those claims.

Iowa is now considered the top seed and favorite in the Seattle 4 Region. They should not be considered a shoo-in, though. They will have to face a tough competitor in either Duke or Colorado, and Ole Miss just proved that nobody is safe from an upset in this tournament.

For a team already soaring though, you have to like their chances. Here are the best social media reactions to the historic upset.
