New Dolphins LB Trey Flowers never gave up hope about finding a team for 2022

MIAMI GARDENS — Trey Flowers has been limited by injuries the past two years, his sack totals have diminished and NFL teams were deep into training camps as he didn't even get a nibble.

“You have faith,” said Flowers, adding he never thought he would not find a team this season.

That faith paid off when the Dolphins signed him Monday.

Flowers, 29, overlapped with defensive coordinator Josh Boyer in New England. Despite familiarity with the system, “I still have to come in and kind of watch and see how they do it and figure it out,” he said Wednesday.

General manager Chris Grier said Flowers’ connections to those already in the organization played a role.

“I think Trey’s familiarity with our system and scheme helps, even with New England, Josh, obviously, ‘E-Rob’ (Elandon Roberts) and those guys,” Grier said. “So he knows guys here on the roster. We were kind of looking for someone with his skill set, a guy that can play all along the line of scrimmage. With his time in New England, he could do some rush inside as well, too, which will help.”

New England drafted Flowers in the fourth round in 2015 out of Arkansas. Starting in 2016, he went four consecutive seasons with at least 6.5 sacks and 45 tackles. The last of that string, however, occurred with the Detroit Lions, where he played the past three seasons.

Flowers endured injuries the past two seasons, limiting him to 14 total games and 3.5 total sacks.

“We understand that he’s had some bad luck with injuries a couple years but here, he’s not asked to come in here and be a star for us,” Grier said. “It’s come here, just be a good player and help us like he is. He’s a great teammate, a good person. Everything we’ve heard about him was from people in New England and Detroit about what kind of character and person he was.”

Flowers is stepping into a rotation of edge defenders that includes Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel and Melvin Ingram. But he said he’s fine with that.

“I’m all about winning,” Flowers said. “However that comes, I’m going to put my best foot forward.”
