Dodgers' Seager set for season-ending Tommy John surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed on Monday with a right ulnar collateral ligament sprain that will require Tommy John surgery.

The Dodgers placed Seager, who turned 24 on Friday, on the 10-day disabled list due to the ailment and recalled infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.

Elbow issues first surfaced for Seager last summer, though he was advised by the team not to undergo surgery after having an MRI in the offseason. His winter strengthening program delayed the beginning of his throwing at spring training, and he instead was used as a designated hitter before moving back to the field.

"I had a few bad throws over the weekend and went and got an MRI this morning," Seager told reporters Monday. "It was necessary to have surgery now.

"I was pretty good through spring, and I was pretty good through the beginning and then ... it hurt, I had some numbness and it was time to go get it looked at."

Seager, who has also been battling a hip injury, has hit .267 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 26 games this season. He went 1-for-4 against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, playing the entire game.

Seager, a two-time All-Star and the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year, has hit .302 with 54 home runs and 179 RBIs across his four major league seasons.

"It's almost peace of mind now," Seager said of addressing his elbow surgically. "There was no gray area to this decision. It was pretty cut-and-dry."

Valera has hit .373 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 17 games with Oklahoma City. The 26-year-old appeared in the majors earlier this month, going hitless in two plate appearances.

Chris Taylor will play shortstop for the Dodgers against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.

Seager joins third baseman Justin Turner (left wrist fracture), second baseman Logan Forsythe (right shoulder inflammation) and outfielder Yasiel Puig (hip and foot soreness) on the Dodgers' disabled list.
