Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league utility man Connor Joe underwent surgery for testicular cancer.

Joe, 27, announced the news in an Instagram post Wednesday. Joe said doctors caught the cancer early, and Joe believes cases like his are “very curable.”

Joe added that he decided to share his story in an effort to raise awareness. He’s hoping he can help others by talking about his testicular cancer.

After being drafted in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Joe has moved around to a couple different organizations. He received a brief cup of coffee in the majors last season, playing in eight games with the San Francisco Giants. Joe registered a hit and a walk in 16 plate appearances.

After being designated for assignment by the Giants last April, Joe was returned to the Dodgers — he had previously been plucked from the organization as part of the Rule 5 draft — but did not appear in any games with the big league club last season.

Joe is the second baseball player to reveal his battle with cancer this spring. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor on his colon in mid-March.
