Dodgers fans boo manager Dave Roberts before World Series Game 5
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts got a rousing ovation in Boston ahead of World Series Game 1, a nod to his hero role as a player on the Red Sox’s 2004 championship team.
On Sunday, he got booed. In Los Angeles.
Home fans angry after Game 4
The Dodgers blew a 4-0 lead in Saturday’s World Series Game 4. Many criticized Roberts for pulling starter Rich Hill in the seventh inning while the Dodgers were still pitching a shutout, President Donald Trump included.
The Red Sox got a three-run home run from Mitch Moreland shortly after Hill left the game and rallied for a 9-6 win to take a 3-1 lead in the series.
Dodgers fans who apparently agreed with Trump’s take let Roberts have it with a chorus of boos during the pregame introductions ahead of Game 5.
Roberts has had a strong 3 years in L.A.
The Dodgers hired Roberts in 2015 to lead their clubhouse. He earned National League Manager of the Year honors in his first season. He has since managed the Dodgers to consecutive World Series appearances.
The Dodgers lost a seven-game heartbreaker to the Houston Astros last season and are now trailing a Red Sox team widely considered to have superior talent in this year’s World Series.
Fans are well within their rights to be angry with the outcome of Game 4. But maybe they should cut Roberts some slack considering his three-year run has been largely filled with success.
