The Los Angeles Dodgers placed catcher Russell Martin on the bereavement list prior to Saturday's game against the New York Yankees.
Catcher Austin Barnes was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the roster vacancy.
Martin, 36, is batting .207 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 69 games.
His playing time has diminished due to the breakout experienced by rookie catcher Will Smith. Martin is just 8-for-59 with two homers and nine RBIs since the start of July and is 0-for-16 over his last seven appearances.
Barnes, 29, is batting .196 with five homers and 23 RBIs in 70 games for the Dodgers. He has spent the last month at Oklahoma City, batting .250 with six homers and 16 RBIs over 20 games.
