Diego Maradona's statue gives Cristiano Ronaldo's bust a run for tarnished bronze
It’s been a banner year for statues of soccer legends.
First there was the unveiling of a Cristiano Ronaldo bust at an airport in the Portuguese star’s hometown, which drew favorable comparisons to Sloth from “The Goonies” in March and inspired another sculptor to produce a more accurate bronze likeness of the Real Madrid forward last month.
Now we’ve been treated to this sculpture of Argentine legend Diego Maradona in Kolkata, India:
It is 12-foot tall and frightening in a “Mrs. Doubtfire” sort of way.
But just as Ronaldo signed off on his original bust, Maradona gave his seal of approval in India.
“I am not god of football but a simple footballer,” said Maradona, most famous for his “Hand of God” goal, which helped deliver Argentina the 1986 World Cup. “It’s amazing to have my statue here.”
Others weren’t so approving, seeing more of another legend: “Britain’s Got Talent” singer Susan Boyle.

So, we now must answer the most important soccer question of 2017: Ronaldo or Maradona?
I’m taking Maradona by a hair.
