Diamond Heels lose key recruit to MLB

In-state prospect Brooks Brannon committed to North Carolina as part of a recruiting class that could help the Tar Heels get back to the postseason next year. But the catcher won’t be heading to Chapel Hill and instead will be heading to the Boston Red Sox farm system.

After Brannon was drafted in the ninth round of the 2022 MLB draft this week, he’s made his decision and he is signing with the Red Sox. Brannon wasn’t projected to be taken that high out of high school but with Boston taking a chance on him there, the decision to go pro and follow the money appears to be the right one.

The Randleman, North Carolina native is coming off a monster senior season and was one of the best players not only in the state but in the country.

With the decision to sign with Boston, Brannon will now go to the instructional league for the year. He will then enter his first spring training with the franchise in 2023.
