DFS Yahoo Golf Talk: Rocket Mortgage Classic

·2 min read

Detroit Golf Club is set to host the fourth edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Past winners include Nate Lashley, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cam Davis. The latter two have given this course a reputation as a bomber's paradise but does the rest of the leaderboard agree? Let's dive in.

Finding Fairways

When you look at top-5 finishes at the RMC, more than 60% of them were arriving with a driving distance less than TOUR average. You don't need power to compete here, despite what DeChambeau might tell you.

On the flip side, more than 70 percent of eventual top-5 finishers were hitting more fairways than the field in their 12 lead-in starts. Let's open our search by finding the current fairway finders.

Here are the leaders in fairways hit, over the last 12 rounds:

Satoshi Kodaira
Ryan Moore
Joohyung Kim
Troy Merritt
Zach Johnson
C.T. Pan
Michael Thompson
Chris Kirk
Webb Simpson
David Lipsky
Kiradech Aphibarnrat
Brendan Steele
Chad Ramey
Joel Dahmen
Henrik Norlander

Joohyung Kim ($38): He's not going to get a lot of love from the industry at this price point, but his game could be well-suited if accuracy continues to matter at Detroit Golf Club. Kim has provne he has upside on the PGA TOUR with a top 25 at the U.S. Open and a podium finish at the Scottish Open, against a very strong field.

Putt for Dough

Sticking with the top-5 analysis form the past three RMCs, we see that more than 75% of those contenders were arriving with positive putting form.

Putting is not a category I typically chase but I make an exception when heading to easy courses where the putter is often a key separator.

Here are the top performers in strokes gained putting over the last 12 rounds:

Adam Svensson
Patrick Rodgers
Denny McCarthy
Mark Hubbard
Michael Gligic
Justin Lower
Chesson Hadley
Vincent Whaley
Beau Hossler
Callum Tarren
Scott Piercy
Kelly Kraft
Danny Willett
Patrick Cantlay
James Hahn

Mark Hubbard ($24): He's riding a hot putter with three straight top 15s. Hubbard missed the cut here last year but posted a top 15 during the 2020 edition.

Hopefully, these stats will give you some names to dive into when it comes to researching your final selections this week over at Yahoo!
