DFS Dish: THE PLAYERS Championship

TPC Sawgrass returns to host another edition of the PGA TOUR's flagship event, THE PLAYERS.

A star-studded field readies to take on a water-heavy layout, which was designed by Pete Dye who was known for tricking and deceiving players with his architecture.

There are many ways to attack this course but let's focus on the grass.

Not so Tricky Trivialis

THE PLAYERS returned to a March date on the schedule ahead of the 2019 edition and the move brought a big change in the way this course plays.

March means more unpredictability in the weather but also means the course is overseeded instead of wall-to-wall bermuda.

Here is what Xander Schauffele had to say about the May conditions, "It played much shorter, more strategic, firmer, faster, just a different looking golf course."

The general consensus seems to land on the overseeded conditions benefitting the big hitters while removing the Southeast advantage that many had when it came to reading bermudagrass greens. The greens this week have a bermuda base but are overseeded with poa trivialis, so who might enjoy that type of grass?

Here are the top performers in adjusted strokes gained per round when playing courses with poa trivialis greens, over the last two years:

Jon Rahm
Justin Thomas
Xander Schauffele
Matt Fitzpatrick
Keegan Bradley
Brian Harman
Tyrrell Hatton
Scottie Scheffler
Sungjae Im
Will Zalatoris
Sam Burns
Max Homa
Jordan Spieth
Patrick Cantlay
Alex Noren

We can also look at performance versus baseline to see who shows the largest increase in performance compared to their typical scores:

Adam Hadwin
Brian Harman
Si Woo Kim
Keegan Bradley
Adam Svensson
Justin Thomas
J.T. Poston
Matt Kuchar
Tom Hoge
Alex Noren
Tyrrell Hatton
Sam Burns
Greyson Sigg
Billy Horschel
Adam Long

Overlap List: names that show up on both lists include Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman, Tyrrell Hatton, Sam Burns, and Alex Noren.

Bradley Brings Backdoor Top 10 Momentum

The standout striker bagged a top 10 at Bay Hill thanks to a closing 67 that was one of the best rounds of the day. Now he'll head to TPC Sawgrass where he's landed top 30s in each of his last four visits. He should be given strong consideration when setting DFS rosters this week, given his affordable price tag.

Harman to snap his slump at Sawgrass

The smooth-swinging lefty arrives with missed cuts in three of his last four starts and a T42 in the other. His game has gone cold but TPC Sawgrass might be the perfect cure for his woes. The Georgia Bulldog has bagged top 10s in two of his last three tries at THE PLAYERS.
