DFS Dish: BMW PGA Championship

·2 min read

The DP World Tour's flagship event is taking place this week at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England.

The event draws a very strong field with notable names including Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry, among others.

There is lots of course history to lean on this week as a long-time host of this event but we can also look at performance in the region to pick up on some potential value options for our DraftKings squads.

Regional Comfort

I often like to look at performance by grass type or course length in this spot but when traveling across the pond, comfort in the region is a big plus.

Looking at other events played in Great Britain or Ireland, here are the top performers over the last two years:

Tommy Fleetwood
Jon Rahm
Matt Fitzpatrick
Tyrrell Hatton
Shane Lowry
Lucas Herbert
Adam Scott
Viktor Hovland
Billy Horschel
Ian Poulter
Talor Gooch
Aaron Rai
Rory McIlroy
Patrick Reed
Abraham Ancer

We can also look at performance versus baseline to see who shows the largest increase in performance compared to their typical scores:

Lucas Herbert
Rikard Karlberg
Santiago Tarrio
Tommy Fleetwood
Eddie Pepperell
Joakim Lagergren
Ewen Ferguson
Andy Sullivan
Aaron Rai
Richie Ramsay
Victor Perez
David Law
Kiradech Aphibarnrat
Jamie Donaldson
Matt Wallace

Overlap List: names that show up on both lists include Tommy Fleetwood, Lucas Herbert, and Aaron Rai.

Herbert has loads of success in Ireland and Scotland, is it time to carry that over to Wentworth?

Wallace to rebound from a missed cut in HimmerLand

The Englishman posted a top 10 in Detroit but a missed cut at the Wyndham left him at 126th in the FedExCup race, the first man outside of the Playoffs. It was a rough way to end the season but he snapped back with a runner-up finish at the Omega European Masters before missing the cut at last week's Made in HimmerLand. Matt Wallace ($7,700 DK) has top 25s in two of his last four trips to Wentworth which makes for a nice combination of upside when adding it to his recent big finishes in Detroit and Switzerland.

Aaron Rai to build off last year's striking stats

This straight shooter posted a top 10 in Ireland in July but limps in with four straight finishes outside of the top 50. He remains one of the most accurate off the tee which is particularly helpful on a strategic layout like Wentworth. Aaron Rai ($7,500 DK) was 12th in strokes gained off-the-tee at this event last year and 18th on approach. If steady striking is your cup of tea, Rai presents himself as a very affordable option on DraftKings this week.
