Detroit Tigers place Miguel Cabrera on IL, add Renato Nunez to 40-man roster

The Detroit Tigers will be missing their Hall of Fame slugger for the next several games.

Eleven-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera was placed on the injured list Sunday with a left biceps strain. In a corresponding move, Renato Nunez, a first baseman/designated hitter signed to a minor-league contract this past winter, has been added to the 40-man roster and will report to Detroit.

Julio Teheran, another offseason addition, was moved Sunday from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.

Cabrera has a shot at eclipsing 500 home runs and 3,000 hits this season and is batting .125 with a home run and three RBIs through seven games in 2021. He has split time at first base and designated hitter in a struggling Tigers lineup.

Nunez, who crushed 50 home runs over 263 games with the Orioles 2018-20, hit just .188 with one long ball in 33 plate appearances during spring training. He did not make the team out of camp, but elected to stay with the organization instead of signing a minor-league contract elsewhere.

Teheran lands on the longer injured list after being a late scratch Friday from his second start of the season. A two-time All-Star, Teheran was signed to a minor-league deal after struggling (10.50 ERA through nine starts) in 2020.

Jonathan Schoop will start at first base for the Tigers' 1:10 p.m. game Sunday with Cleveland. Nunez has been penciled in as the DH.
