FRIDAY’S GAME: Detroit Tigers homer 3 times in 5-4 victory over Seattle Mariners

Michael Lorenzen of the Detroit Tigers pitches during the 93rd MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

Game notes: It’s a matchup of American League All-Stars at, well, the park where the All-Star Game was played on Tuesday. Lorenzen, the Tigers’ rep, was called upon in a jam after Toronto’s Jordan Romero left with an injury. After a couple of baserunners (one of whom wasn’t his fault), Lorenzen buckled down and recovered with a whiff of two-time Home Run Derby champ Pete Alonso.

Kirby, however, wasn’t as effective. After entering as the AL’s fourth pitcher, with a 1-0 lead, the 2019 first-rounder (15 picks after Riley Greene was selected by Detroit at No. 5 overall) gave up a double to ex-Tiger J.D. Martinez, followed by a single to Luis Arraez two batters late to even the score at 1-1.

Kirby has two career appearances vs. the Tigers, to mixed results. In August 2022, he dominated the Tigers over five innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five. In October’s next-to-last game, however, he gave up six hits and three walks for four runs over four innings in a loss.

After tonight’s matchup, the Tigers and M’s wrap up the series with a 4:10 p.m. start on Sunday. The Tigers then head east — they don’t have a lot of choice on that, considering Seattle’s location — for a four-game set against the Royals in Kansas City beginning Monday. The M’s, meanwhile, get a visit from another AL Central squad as division leader (yes, still) Minnesota starts a four-game series on Monday.
