7:25 p.m.: The Lions win, 26-23, on Matt Prater’s 39-yard field goal as time expired. They improve to 1-2. The Lions started the drive from their 9 with 4:49 left. Stafford hit Marvin Jones for a 20-yard gain to the Detroit 42. On second-and-5 from his 47, Stafford threw a 52 yard bomb to Marvin Hall to the 1 yard line, but it was nullified by a holding penalty on Halapoulivaati Vaitai at the 2-minute warning. They wiggled out of a second-and-15 after a pass interference call on Byron Murphy gave the Lions a first down at midfield. On second-and-10 from the 38, the Lions beat the blitz when Stafford hit Jones for 20 yards to the 18.
7:12 p.m.: The Lions’ defense stops the Cardinals after only allowing them to gain 27 yards and reach midfield. After a punt, the Lions start from their 9 with 4:49 left.
7:06 p.m.: Prater’s 35-yard field goal ties the score at 23 with 6:44 left. Stafford held the ball too long on third-and-goal from the 8 and was sacked by Haason Reddick. Hockenson had two good catches and the Cards’ even took a penalty for having 12 players on the field, but the Lions’ offense couldn’t capitalize. Stafford’s one throw to the end zone went over a tightly covered Hockenson.
6:57 p.m.: The Cards go three and out and nearly take a safety when Romeo Okwara almost sacks Murray in the end zone on third down. They manage just 2 yards. After a 19 yard run by Agnew, the Lions will start from Arizona’s 36 with 11:03 left.
6:52 p.m.: The Lions punt after penalties and a sack derail their drive. The Lions started from their 22 and looked like they were about to go three-and-out after Swift didn’t turn his head around on a blitz and was hit in the back by Stafford’s pass. But on third-and-10 from their 10, Stafford hit Golladay up the middle for a 19-yard gain. On the next play, Hockenson had a great catch and run for 27 yards to the Arizona 44. Corey Peters’ sack followed by an illegal shit penalty on James put the Lions in a third-and-20 from their 46. They couldn’t convert and after a great punt and coverage, the Cards will take over from their 2 with 11:58 left in the fourth quarter.
6:41 p.m.: The Cardinals take a 23-20 lead with 35 seconds left in the third quarter on Murray’s 4-yard pass to Isabella, who beat Darryl Roberts. Arizona used the hurry-up offense well. Murray gained 13 yards on a keeper on third-and-5 to the Detroit 26. Then he hit Hopkins for a short pass that went for 11 yards. Okudah was shaken up on the drive and was replaced by Chris Jones.
6:27 p.m.: The Lions settle for Prater’s 24-yard field goal for a 20-16 lead with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Kerryon Johnson had two nice runs for a first down. But Stafford twice missed open receivers in the end zone. On second-and-goal, Stafford overthrew James in the corner. On third down, he overthrew Amendola in the back of the end zone.
6:22 p.m.: Okudah gets his first interception and at a great time. On third-and-12 from the Arizona 38, after Romeo Okwara get the first sack of the game for the Lions, Murray passed to Hopkins. Okudah stepped in front nicely and returned the ball 36 yards to the Arizona 22 with 7:36 left.
6:14 p.m.: The Lions got three-and-out and manage just one yard on pass to Golladay. Peterson was stopped for no gain on the first play of the drive that started from their 25. After a 60-yard punt, the Cards take over from their 14 with 9:42 left in the third quarter.
6:10 p.m.: The Cardinals settle for a 54 yard field goal to cut Lions’ lead to 17-16 with 11:19 left in the third quarter. The Cards started from their 25. Murray had way too much time to throw and that allowed him to find a wide-open Hopkins on a curl route. Okudah whiffed on the tackle and Hopkins’ catch went for 21 yards to the Detroit 40. Okudah made a nice tackle to plays later with a hard hit on Isabella’s end around that he stopped for a loss of 6 yards. But on the next play, the Cards faced third-and-15 and the Lions rushed only four, which gave Murray a lot of time to find KeeSean Johnson for a 14-yard gain. The Cards tried to get a cheap first down by getting the Lions to jump offside on fourth-and-1 but instead they were called for a false start.
5:50 p.m.: End of the first half. The Lions lead 17-13. The Cards had one final drive that started from their 21 with 26 seconds left. But Murray made a big mistake when he was called for intentional grounding with 14 seconds left because he didn’t get out of the tackle box when he threw away the ball from his 31. After a 10-second runoff, the Cards let the clock run out. It looked like Trey Flowers was the key to that play because he got off a block and then cut off Murray’s potential running lane up the middle that forced him to throw it away.
5:42 p.m.: The Lions take a 17-13 lead on Stafford’s 15-yard bullet pass to Kenny Golladay with 31 seconds left. Boy, did the Lions miss Golladay. He has 3 catches for 26 yards. The Lions started from their 25 with 1:53 left. The Lions answered the Cards’ shallow cross with their own shallow cross on a pass to Jamal Agnew that went for 20 yards to the Detroit 45. Stafford threw a nice short pass to Hockenson for 11 yards and first down to the Arizona 44. De’Andre Swift caught a short pass he took for 19 yards to the Cards’ 15.
5:32 p.m.: The Cardinals took a 13-10 lead with 1:53 left when Murray ran a bootleg and juked Okudah from the 1. Zane Gonzalez missed the extra point kick. The Cards started from their 26 after mortar kickoff by the Lions. They got into Lions territory on three plays when Hopkins caught consecutive passes for 18 and 11 yards. On third-and-3 from the 16, Chase Edmonds ran a great shallow cross and was wide open for a 15-yard gain.
5:19 p.m.: Lions take a 10-7 lead on Stafford’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jesse James -- yes, Jesse James -- with 6:15 left. A couple of nice runs by Peterson and a pretty good call by Darrell Bevell for a draw to Peterson that went for 8 yards to the Arizona 6 on second-and-10 one play after Peterson was stopped for no gain.
5:13 p.m.: Takeaway No. 2! Jamie Collins picks off Murray when he steps in front of a short pass intended for Fitzgerald. Lions take over at the Arizona 20 with 9:37 left. Didn’t someone really smart predict the Lions would get their first takeaway today?
5:08 p.m.: Jesse James lives! The tight end makes his first catch of the season on a beautifully designed little touch pass on third-and-1 that went 15 yards to the Detroit 47. The Lions have two terrible plays in a row that kill the drive: a false start on T.J. Hockenson, then a sack by former Lion Devon Kennard on third-and-12. Fox punts 54 yards to the Arizona 10 with 11:18 left in the second quarter.
4:58 p.m.: Arizona takes a 7-3 lead with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Danny Isabella beats Darryl Roberts on an end zone fade with a perfectly thrown ball by Murray. Roberts also was flagged for pass interference in the red zone. Okudah looked bad again when he blew coverage and let Isabella run free down the left sideline for a 26-yard gain to the Detroit 43. Okudah redeemed himself in the red zone when he made his first big play of his career by stuffing Hopkins for a 3-yard loss on a swing pass. Agnew returns the ensuing kickoff to the Detroit 23.
4:49 p.m.: Three and out by the Lions that features an incomplete pass to Kenny Golladay, a draw to Peterson that gets stuffed for -2 yards and an incomplete pass to Amendola on third-and-7. Stafford and Amendola have looked out of sync this year. Stafford seems to be throwing behind Amendola often. A great punt by Jack Fox goes a touchback after some weird ruling that Tony McRae didn’t “establish himself” after running out of the end zone and downing the ball at the Arizona 2 with 4:18 left in the first quarter.
4:43 p.m.: Stop the presses! The Lions get their first takeaway of the season when Kyler Murray’s pass on third-and-10 from the Lions’ 30 up the middle to tight end Dan Arnold is tipped into Duron Harmon’s hands. He returns its 21 yards to the Detroit 32 with 5:28 left in the first quarter. Jeff Okudah was beat pretty bad early in the drive on a hurry-up play, when DeAndre Hopkins ran down the sideline for 30 yards.
4:38 p.m.: Chase Edmonds returns the kickoff to the Arizona 28. Cards start their offense with 8:20 left in the first quarter.
4:36 p.m.: The Lions settle for Matt Prater’s 37-yard goal after an 11-play drive. Adrian Peterson looks good. On the second play from scrimmage he breaks loose for 27 yards. On third-and-11, a holding call on Byron Murphy against Danny Amendola negates an interception. Lions get a first down at Cards’ 26. But on third-and-6 from the 9, Stafford holds the ball forever and gets sacked by Jordan Phillips, forcing Prater kick.
4:25 p.m.: The Cardinals won the coin toss, so the Lions start on offense after a touchback.
