Detroit Lions alter practice schedule; how this week will be different than Cincinnati

After the Detroit Lions played their worst game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals, Lions coach Dan Campbell said he regretted how he approached practice in the days leading up to the game.

The Lions eschewed their normal Wednesday padded practice that week and focused on teaching instead.

Coming off Sundays' 28-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Campbell opted for another light Wednesday workout, though the first-year Lions coach said the circumstances are different heading into this week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I just kind of altered the schedule knowing it was a little bit different," Campbell said Wednesday. "Just thought it would help them with recovery and everything, get them refocused. It’ll be all about teaching today and then we’ll ramp it up tomorrow."

The Lions stayed overnight Sunday in L.A. and held morning meetings at their hotel before flying home Monday.

After a day off Tuesday, they reconvened for a full workday Wednesday, but with a late-afternoon walk-through in lieu of practice.

Campbell said players will be in pads for at least some portion of Thursday's workout.

"I don’t know if we’ll go the full time but that was the other thing was, Cincinnati, we didn’t do pads at all and so I think at least we get a period of it," Campbell said. "It just sets the tone for practice and knowing what we’re getting ready to face."

The Lions listed Trey Flowers (knee), T.J. Hockenson (knee/ankle), A.J. Parker (shoulder) and D'Andre Swift (groin) as limited participants in their estimated practice report Wednesday, and Campbell said Parker came out of his injury "better than we thought."

"That's day-to-day," Campbell said. On Monday, Campbell said Parker could be "down for a little while."

Seven players missed practice for the Eagles (2-5) on Wednesday, including starters Fletcher Cox (rest), Miles Sanders (ankle/foot), Anthony Harris (hands/groin) and DeVonta Smith (headache).
