If Carlsbad had a quarterback on the roster as experienced and productive as former Cavemen hurler Trevor Rogers, they would be rightfully regarded as a serious contender in perhaps the toughest district (3-6A) in New Mexico.

But the graduation of Jonah Leyva has left a void at least four candidates are seeking to fill. The competition for the starting job to direct Carlsbad’s balanced triple option offensive attack is expected to continue until deep into preseason camp, which begins July 31.
