Report: Yankee Stadium street to be dedicated as 'Jeter Street'
Because a plaque in Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park just wasn’t enough to properly honor what Derek Jeter means to the Yankees, it sounds like the city of New York is going to take things one step further.
It appears that fans will soon be walking down “Jeter Street” as they visit Yankee home games.
‘Jeter Street’ is coming to the Bronx
Two New York City councilwomen from the Bronx, Vanessa Gibson and Diana Ayala, are planning to introduce legislation to rename part of East 161st Street after the Yankee captain, according to amNewYork’s Alex Mitchell. Passage of the legislation is reportedly expected to be a formality.
Once the street is renamed, Yankee Stadium’s address could very well be One Jeter Street in the Bronx, as it’s currently One East 161st Street.
Adding to the Yankee nostalgia is one of the cross streets by Yankee Stadium, as Jeter Street will also intersect with (Mariano) Rivera Avenue.
Jeter is currently up for election to Hall of Fame by the BBWAA, but the only question about his campaign is whether or not he will enter Cooperstown unanimously like Rivera. According to Hall of Fame voting compiler Ryan Thibodeaux’s database, the shortstop is currently a “yes” on every known ballot.
Voting results are set to be announced on Jan. 21.
