The Jets may have lost their game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, but there were a few rookies that should make the team happy after their solid performances.

Denzel Mims finally made his NFL debut, and it was a solid start to his career in the green and white. Mims had four receptions for 42 yards, leading the Jets on the day, and they all came in the first half of the game. His longest haul came on a nice 16-yard catch that helped out Sam Darnold because it was off location a tad.

“Early it looked like there was some good stuff there. He showed up, he made some plays, made some catches,” head coach Adam Gase said. “You could tell his length is real, he uses his body to his advantage.”

“I was very excited when I had my first catch. I had a big grin on my face,” Mims added.

The second-rounder has been battling a hamstring injury since training camp, but the Jets believed they got a steal in Mims when he was drafted. This will be a performance the team hopes he can build on.

Also, RB La’Mical Perine was used more by the Jets and he had the team’s only touchdown on the day – it was also his first career score. He showed off his speed running to the right side and diving with the ball to touch the pylon for the score.

He was stymied, like the rest of the offense, in the second half. Overall, he had 39 yards on 11 carries.

“Just being in the NFL is a blessing, but being able to score a touchdown in the NFL is even better,” Perine said after the game.

On defense, Bryce Huff had four combined tackles, that included a loud tackle for loss in the third quarter. The undrafted rookie had a sack last week against the Miami Dolphins, so it is good to see Huff building off that.

The Jets are now 0-7, so if there is anything to evaluate moving forward, it is the rookies. Giving them the opportunity to make plays and develop is the best thing possible for New York, and that’s exactly what happened in this one.
