Dentist reveals how she can tell you’re pregnant just by looking in your mouth: ‘I’m freaking out’

A dentist on TikTok is going viral after she revealed one of the early signs of pregnancy that can be found in your mouth!

Fourth year DDS student and TikToker, @thatdentalgal_, recently added a third video to her ongoing series entitled, “Things your dentist can tell about you just by looking in your mouth” — and this time, her focus was on pregnancy.

In the video, she explains that your dentist may be able to tell you’re pregnant just by looking in your mouth — “not only due to the nausea and enamel erosion, but due to something called pregnancy gingivitis, which is seen in 30-50% of pregnant patients.”

“Gums become inflamed, tender, and more prone to bleeding,” she goes on to explain, displaying a photo example of pregnancy gingivitis.

As reported by HealthLine, pregnancy gingivitis can be one of the early symptoms of pregnancy, developing as early as 8 weeks.

The reason for this, they explain, is that during pregnancy, progesterone levels are high, which can cause the development of bacterial plaque that can attack gums.

This can lead to tooth decay, loose teeth, and, as @thatdentalgal explained, pregnancy gingivitis.

‘Not me checking my teeth in the mirror after watching this video…’

TikTok was shocked by this dental revelation — and many started wondering if their own gums were providing clues.

“Okay um I noticed my gums bleeding like three weeks ago but I also changed the head on my electric toothbrush. I’m freaking out now,” one nervous user wrote. (She later followed up in the comments to reveal that she was not, in fact, pregnant.)

“Not me checking my teeth in the mirror after watching this video,” another anxious user commented.

Other TikTokers shared their own dental experiences during pregnancy.

“My gums bled so much during pregnancy! During my cleaning they were extra careful because even the smallest touch caused so much bleeding!” one parent wrote.

Given the importance of good dental hygiene, be sure to talk to your dentist about your tooth and gum health — especially if you’re expecting a little one!
