Demetrious Johnson's wild arm bar wins Yahoo Sports Submission of the Year; Francis Ngannou gets KO of the Year

No matter how many times I see it, I remain enthralled by the arm bar that Demetrious Johnson finished Ray Borg with in their flyweight title fight at UFC 216 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Oct. 7.

It was arguably the greatest submission I’ve seen, and it was easily enough to win my Submission of the Year award for 2017.

Johnson suplexed Borg and while they were still in the air, Johnson’s crazy quickness and athleticism allowed him to catch Borg in the arm bar and finish the fight, in the process setting the UFC record for most consecutive successful title defenses.

The Knockout of the Year in MMA was also an easy choice. Francis Ngannou caught Alistair Overeem with a kind of combination left hook-left uppercut punch that put the veteran down with a thud and quickly out.

It was a frightening display of punching power and easily leapfrogged the many great KOs we saw during the year to become the easy choice as my 2017 MMA KO of the Year.

Earlier, I chose Rose Namajunas as my female Fighter of the Year and Max Holloway as my male Fighter of the Year. I picked the Justin Gaethje-Michael Johnson bout at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale as my Fight of the Year.
