Decatur Heritage grad bound for NCAA tournament

Mar. 11—Giancarlo Valdez, who starred on Decatur Heritage's 2019 state championship team, is headed to the Big Dance.

Valdez and his Stetson Hatters teammates qualified for the NCAA tournament by winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament championship game Sunday over Austin Peay, 94-91.

It's the first ever NCAA tournament bid for Stetson University, which is located in Deland, Florida. The ASUN also includes North Alabama, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb University, North Florida and Queens.

Valdez, a redshirt junior, has been limited by injuries the last two seasons. In 20 games this season, he has averaged 2.3 points a game. At Decatur Heritage, he averaged 21.2 points as a senior and 18.9 points as a junior.

Stetson will find out its first-round opponent during Sunday's NCAA Selection Show.
