Brooklyn Nets center Day’Ron Sharpe on Monday expressed his excitement about eventually playing with the likes of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

Sharpe was the 29th overall pick in the NBA draft after averaging 9.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists last season at North Carolina. He finished runner-up for ACC Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in offensive rebounding percentage (.183) and rebounding (3.4).

The 19-year-old was heavily linked to the Nets during the pre-draft process. He worked out with the Nets at one point and was excited about potentially joining the organization. Once the Nets took him, as Sharpe explained, he couldn’t believe it.

I was like, ‘Dang! I’m about to play with K.D., James Harden and Kyrie.’ It’s crazy! I play ‘2K’ and we consider the Nets a super team so you can’t play with them because Kyrie, James Harden and KD dunk and make everything.

Sharpe, who believes he could be a sleeper in the draft, figures to have an opportunity to play next season. Nets head coach Steve Nash said Sharpe and fellow first-round pick Cameron Thomas will have the chance to compete for minutes.

The Nets like his physicality and ability to rebound, and Sharpe projects to be a good fit with the team. With the future of DeAndre Jordan in question, Sharpe could be a potential candidate to earn some of his minutes in the frontcourt next season.

He believes he can step up and be physical if needed.

I feel like when it comes to physicality, I feel like I’m a physical player. I’m not really going to let anybody push me around or do what they want. I’m going to hold my ground. The way I can prepare for the NBA level of physicality is just to get my body stronger, get my body right.

While the Nets certainly boast plenty of firepower, Sharpe appears to have the opportunity to earn playing time next season. He will also have the chance to learn from three of the best players in the game, something that should only help his development.
