The Dartmouth Big Green made a historic coaching hire Tuesday. The school hired Callie Brownson to be an offensive quality control coach. With the move, Brownson is believed to be the first full-time female football coach in Division I.
Dartmouth head coach Buddy Teevens said Brownson is a “forward-thinking individual,” and added that a few players approached him about hiring Brownson during the preseason.
“Callie is as good as anyone I’ve ever had in terms of her skill set, preparedness, attention to detail and passion,” Teevens said. “Players came up to me after a few days of preseason wondering if I would consider hiring her. She is a forward-thinking individual, very broad-minded. We had an opening, the preseason was kind of like a tryout and she excelled — on and off the field — every day.”
He also added that Brownson “is a coach who happens to be a female as opposed to a woman who is trying to coach.”
“That distinction became very apparent to my players and coaches. We’ve hired a coach who will better our football program,” Teevens said. Brownson was one of two women interns on Dartmouth’s staff.
The video below shows the moment Teevens announces to the team that he has offered Brownson a full-time position for the 2018 season.
Brownson has plenty of football experience. She was a member of the D.C. Divas of the Women’s Football Alliance for seven seasons. She has also won two gold medals as part of Team USA Women’s Football, coached at the high school level, and was also a scouting intern with the New York Jets last season.
Brownson’s position does not allow her to coach players during games, but she will have various duties with the team during practices.
“I am extremely grateful to Coach Teevens and the Dartmouth football program for this opportunity to join the staff this season,” Brownson said. “The preseason alone has been an incredible experience, but now I look forward to learning and growing in the game of football with this great group of coaches and players throughout the year.”
