Darrell Bevell will not be coming to Washington

Veteran coach Darrell Bevell looked like a solid option to be the next offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders.

That option is no more, as Bevell informed the Commanders and the New York Jets he was declining interviews for their open offensive coordinator positions, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

You can’t blame Bevell here. Let’s analyze the Washington situation first. The Commanders need a quarterback. Sure, Sam Howell shows promise, but he’s a fifth-round pick with one career start. Secondly, what type of security would Bevell have with Washington? Head coach Ron Rivera could be entering a lame-duck season with new ownership expected to come on board soon.

Bevell, who is now the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, has a good gig. He can afford to wait for another opportunity. Before Miami, his last two jobs were dead-end offensive coordinator jobs under Matt Patricia [Detroit] and Urban Meyer [Jacksonville.]

The Jets are in a similar position to Washington. They have a good, young defense and some intriguing weapons on offense, but badly need a quarterback.

You can’t blame Bevell for saying, “thanks, but no thanks.”
