Sauce Gardner is already among the best cornerbacks in the NFL in just his second season in the league. He’s already earned the respect of many across the media and among players in the league. That includes Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who threw almost all of his passes Sunday away from Gardner. Gardner was targeted seven times on Prescott’s 38 attempts.
Prescott and Gardner met after the game and Gardner asked why Prescott didn’t throw to him. Prescott told Gardner that he didn’t have to throw to him because “Why challenge the best player on the team?”
The Jets allowed a receiver to record over 100 yards for the second week in a row — CeeDee Lamb went for 143 on 11 catches — but Gardner was far from the reason. His 89.9 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus was second among all corners in Week 2. He only allowed two catches and 16 yards to Lamb — he did allow a touchdown to tight end Jake Ferguson, however.
Gardner almost had a pick-six and, as shown above, he admitted he was thinking about the touchdown before making the catch. Gardner had his down moments, but he still played well overall. And now he has another fan in the league in the Cowboys’ quarterback.
