Dain Dainja commits to Memphis

Apr. 5—CHAMPAIGN — Dain Dainja wasn't in the transfer portal long. Four days after announcing his intent to transfer from Illinois, the 6-foot-9 forward/center committed to Memphis.

Dainja entered the portal Monday and took an official visit to Memphis on Tuesday. His commitment gives the Tigers two from transfers this week, with former Tulsa guard PJ Haggerty choosing Memphis on Thursday.

Dainja played two years at Illinois after transferring from Baylor during the 2021-22 season. He sat out the remainder of that season in Champaign before becoming a part-time starter in 2022-23.

Dainja started 21 of 33 games in his first season on the court with Illinois and averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native's playing time dipped this past season, as he averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in just 10.8 minutes per game — roughly half as much playing time as the season prior.
