Daily gas tracker: Daytona Buc-ee's, Sam's Club drop prices, average dips for 5th day in row

DAYTONA BEACH — Average gas prices fell a fifth day in a row in both Daytona Beach as well as statewide, with regular gasoline at $4.298 and $4.313 a gallon respectively on Tuesday.

In Daytona Beach, Sam's Club and Buc-ee's across the street both lowered prices for regular gasoline to $3.85 a gallon, tied for third-lowest in the state, according to GasBuddy.com.

Industry experts warn that it is too soon to know whether gas prices will keep dipping, one encouraging sign is the continued drop in wholesale crude oil prices which fell below $100 a barrel late Monday and remained below that level as of Wednesday morning.

"It's only time before we sink back under $4/gal average as long as these levels hold," tweeted Patrick DeHaan, the Chicago-based head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.com on Tuesday morning.

Average gas prices topped $4 a gallon for regular gasoline for the first time in 14 years on March 7 and proceeded to climb further, setting new record highs on four consecutive days, both in the Daytona Beach area as well as for all of Florida.

The surge in gas prices was fueled by the escalating conflict in Ukraine which Russia invaded on Feb. 24. Gas prices will likely remain volatile, including the possibility of further price increases, until that invasion ends, DeHaan said in an interview last Friday.

Since peaking at $4.38 a gallon on March 11, the average price of regular gasoline in the Daytona Beach area, which includes all of Volusia and Flagler counties, has now declined nearly nine cents, according to AAA Auto Club, which tracks average prices for metro areas by recording the final credit card purchase of fuel each day at all gas stations throughout the country.

GasBuddy is a popular website and mobile app that lists gas prices at individual stations across the country based on motorists' reports. While its numbers are generally accurate, there can be errors either because the motorist typed the wrong information or because the gas station changed its fuel prices again that had yet to be reported.
