Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told a local radio show on Friday that she thinks it's time for the Redskins to change their name - and that the current name is a large obstacle to getting the team a stadium in the District.
"I think it's past time for the team to deal with [a name that] offends so many people," she said on the Doc & Galdi show on The Team 980. "And this is a great franchise with a great history that's beloved in history and it deserves a name that reflects the affection that we feel for the team."
Bowser said she would like to bring the team back to the city because she believes the District has "the best location for the stadium and we'll continue to work on that."
When asked if the name was an obstacle in getting that done, she said it is.
"It's an obstacle for us locally but it's also an obstacle for the federal government who leases the land to us," she said.
The Mayor made the comments around the 30-minute mark of the clip below.
The team currently plays at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.
