Cycling events to take place in downtown Lenoir

Apr. 8—LENOIR — Saturday, April 20 is set to be a good day for cyclists with both the Bootlegger 100 and the Lenoir Bike Festival set to begin in Downtown Lenoir. The Bootlegger 100 is an annual gravel race hosted by Pisgah Productions and will begin at 8 a.m., while Lenoir's annual bike festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The rigorous Bootlegger 100 is cited by Pisgah as the most challenging gravel race on the east coast. Racers may choose between two routes: a 58 mile route with 4,500 feet of climbing and the 107 mile route that passes through the Blue Ridge Parkway and features 9,700 feet of climbing. Both routes begin and end in downtown Lenoir.

Cyclists ready to test themselves may learn more and register through the Pisgah website at Participants must register by 8 a.m. on the 20.

Those interested in a more casual, family-friendly festival may attend the Lenoir Bike Festival, which will feature a host of fun, cycling-related activities for all ages downtown. The festival will close multiple streets to traffic in order to set up a free-ride lane, an obstacle course and time trials (with prizes). The Lenoir Police Department will host a series of safety classes between 10 a.m. 1 p.m. and will give out free helmets provided by the NC Department of Transportation while supplies last.

A prize drawing will take place at 2 p.m., with free bicycles and other prizes being offered to those present to win. Those looking to learn more about the festival may check online at
