Cumberland's Daniel Diehl makes NC State debut

Jan. 23—CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Cumberland native Daniel Diehl made his collegiate swimming debut for North Carolina State University on Friday in a tri-meet against Virginia and North Carolina.

Diehl won his first event, the 200-yard backstroke. He finished in 1:42:64, winning by more than three seconds.

Diehl finished third in two individual events. In the 20-yard freestyle, he finished in 1:36:08.

His teammate, Jerry Fox won with a 1:35:04.

Diehl also took third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:47:46.

Sebastian Sergile from Virginia won in 1:46:76.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Diehl's team of Ryan Weaver, Noah Bowers and JT Ewing finished fifth with a 1:21:10.

Another relay team from the Wolfpack won the race consisting of Quintin McCarty, Sam Hoover, Noah Henderson and Jerry Fox, timing 1:16:95.

NC State's men's team defeated Virginia 244-109 and North Carolina 258-93.

The No. 4 ranked Wolfpack host No. 8 Texas on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in what will be Diehl's home debut.
