Cubs’ Trevor Williams: Signing with dad’s favorite team ‘icing on the cake’

When news broke that Trevor Williams was signing with the Cubs, his dad, Richard, posted a heartfelt message on Twitter celebrating the news.

The tweet included a photo of Trevor, who spent 2016-20 with the Pirates, on the mound in a Pittsburgh uniform. Richard wrote the photo was during a game at Wrigley Field in 2018.

But when Trevor saw the tweet, he gave his dad a little family ribbing.

“The first thing I did was call and said ‘Dad, what color does the home team wear?’” Williams said Friday. “And even if there’s an ounce of doubt in sending that tweet, you shouldn’t send it if you don’t know for sure that’s where [it was taken].

“He could have easily sent me that picture and I could have been [like], ‘Dad, that’s not at Wrigley Field.’”

Whether he was right or wrong, it’s hard to fault Richard, who grew up in Chicago a Cubs fan and worked at Wrigley Field as an usher. He was elated hearing his son was joining the North Siders.

“He was thrilled, he was over the moon,” Trevor said. “He is a die-hard Cubs fan. He loves the Cubs; he’s always loved the Cubs.”

Trevor grew up in San Diego and became more of a Padres fan, he said. But because of his dad’s fandom, he was a Cubs fan “by family, by blood.” The right-hander has pictures of himself from when he was young wearing Cubs onesies.

Trevor still has family in Chicago — his grandma called him after hearing he signed with the Cubs and offered for his family of five to stay at her two-bedroom home during the season. He’s also good friends with Father Burke Masters, a local priest, who offered for the pitcher and his family to stay at their rectory.

Trevor may not be from Chicago himself, but joining the Cubs is special for him and his family.

“My dad was thrilled,” he said. “It was his dream for me to be a Major League Baseball player, but [also] to put on the Cubs uniform. To play for his favorite team is just icing on the cake.”
